Local Shopping

Yesterday was shop Small Business Saturday®, a program instituted to encourage people to shop at local stores present in their community.  Although I did not go out and spend my dollars yesterday, I am a huge fan of this program and it is a practice which I attempt to follow year round.  Don’t get me wrong, I spend a lot of time in Target and all the other big box stores out there, and, they get plenty of my dollars too.  But, I try and steer clear whenever possible.  I think that is one of the reasons why I am such a fan of yard sales, flea markets and craft shows.  When I see the items in my home, I love that I not only see a chair or shelf that I love but I also remember the story that went along with finding that special piece.

If you take the time to learn about the services available in your community you will be amazed at what you are able to discover.  By attending a juried craft show, I was able to meet potters, iron workers and carpenters who are able to provide dishes, fireplace items, decorative items and handmade furniture.  By purchasing such items from a local craftsperson not only will you be supporting a local business in your community but you have the added benefit of purchasing  a unique item unlike any other.  Etsy.com is a great source for finding different handmade crafts and home items.  Local fruits and vegetables may be purchased at farmers markets, shop at a local bakery and find out if there is a butcher in your area where you can purchase fresh meats.  And don’t forget to look for a local sweets shop where you can purchase homemade chocolates and other candies.  These little shops are out there just waiting for you to discover them.

This is a wonderful time of year.  I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday season and that you are able to find that special something at someplace local!

Welcome

Welcome to my blog!  This is my place to share my experiences relating to my love of decorating.  My name is Denise and I enjoy restoring old pieces of furniture and finding unique items for my home.  They do not have to be priceless treasures but I like to think outside the big box stores.  I am a lover of yard sales, flea markets, thrift stores, craft shows, auctions . . . you name it.  This is my place to share the hits and misses and other random life thoughts that pop into my head! I hope you enjoy taking this journey with me!
